Double success for Cody on Toptracer

Not only was Cody Roberts the first player to get a hole-in-one on our Toptracer, but here he is with Assistant Pro Georgie Mundy collecting a fantastic TaylorMade M4 driver bought with his Toptracer World Cup winning Prize.

Cody, with playing partner Marcus Kail, competed as none other than the hosts Russia against over 60 others in our Toptracer knockout that ran alongside the FIFA World Cup back in June and July. Four teams of two made the final with Cody and Marcus taking top spot with net 6 under.

We’re open!

It’s almost the last Bank Holiday Weekend of the summer, but the great news is that we’re open as usual, 9am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 9am to 9pm on Monday.

We are here all weekend for your serious range practice or private lessons, work on your short game, fun on the putting green, Toptracer challenges, junior roll-ups, private bay hire, plus great food and drink from the Little Kitchen Bistro.

Teeing up for the Hampshire Masters

Good luck to our very own PGA Professional Dan Seymour, and PGA Assistant Professionals Georgie Mundy and Stanley Garland, who will be competing in their final Major of the season, The Be Wiser Insurance PGA Hampshire Masters on Wednesday 29th August at Royal Winchester Golf Club.

Come and see us at the Littleton and Harestock Show 2018

Summer isn’t complete without a traditional summer fete and we’re delighted to be supporting this year’s Littleton and Harestock Show which is held every year as part and parcel of village life since 1921. This year the event is on Saturday 1st September at the Littleton Recreation Ground, and gates open at 12 noon.

Winchester Golf Academy will be running a pitch and putt game where points mean prizes! So come along, have some fun and try your luck.

There’s plenty going on with events in the arena, games and stalls, along with lots of delicious local food and drink; just take a look at the fete’s website here for more info.

Junior news

Great First Season for our WGA Junior Team

Results are in from the final fixture of this year’s Hampshire and Berkshire Junior Golf League at Dummer Golf Club, and we’re delighted that our junior team finished in a fantastic second place, just one point behind Dummer who retained the trophy. This is an impressive performance for the team in their first season in this league. Congratulations to everyone that competed for WGA.

Full results and more photos to follow with a presentation event on 9th September at Dummer. And of course, a huge thank you to Steve Morgan and Rob Mulcahy for managing the team this season.

Pick a time, any time

Let’s face facts: improving your wedge play is going to help your scores and lower your handicap. Rather than trying to guess how hard or long you need to swing to hit a specific yardage, we recommend having three distances that you can hit with each wedge. To do this try and learn the clock technique we’ve described below.

9 o'clock swing
The first position to master is where your arms point to 9 o’clock at the end of your backswing, as shown above. It should then mirror this on your forward swing to ensure consistent distances, finishing around 4 o’clock.

10 o'clock swing
Next, learn your average carry yardage for each wedge with a backswing position that reaches 10 o’clock and a forward swing that finishes at 3 o’clock. This is similar to a three-quarter swing and will help to flight shots.

11 o'clock swing
Finally, take each of your wedges and find out your average carry distance with a full backswing. This shot will fly the highest of the three techniques we’ve just explained and roll out the least.

Watch carefully

We all want to hit the ball further. For some of you that might mean bringing par-5s into play in two, whereas for others it’s being able to carry any trouble between the tee and fairway. Whichever golfer you are, the coaching drill below will give you a great feel for the correct weight shift needed to generate extra power.

Backswing
Start this drill by placing your feet together where your back foot would normally be. From here, take your normal backswing. As you reach the top, initiate your downswing by stepping towards the target with your lead leg, as seen above.

Downswing
Let your body weight naturally follow this stepping movement towards your target. This engages your lower body before your arms and encourages better rotation, which increases your speed, power and the distance you’ll hit the ball.
