Sunday at The Ryder Cup – WGA Ranger Stephen Waters As the sun rose over Le Golf National, we waited in the queue, a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation; against all the odds could Europe bring the Ryder Cup home? There were many more European flags draped over the supporters and the first ’Thunderclap’ of the day began...”BOOM”. As we walked around the course, the dew being hastily removed from the greens by the army of Greenkeepers, we realised what a beautiful setting this was, perfect for victory! The USA fans, though subdued, were quietly confident; surely this was their teams strength – matchplay? As McIlroy approached the first tee the roar from the crowd was deafening, we could feel a tingle of emotion spread through the crowd. So we were off, the battle recommenced, golf played at its very best skill, precision and mastery. The board started to show more red, was this the comeback, Medina revisited? Tension was rising 10.5 to 9.5, we needed to dig in and slowly the momentum swung back in Europe’s favour as consistency and passion paid off. Fittingly Mollinari had the chance to seal victory; as Big Phil’s ball plopped into the water at the 16th and he conceded there was an explosion of noise from every corner of the course – Europe had won. Poults conducted another 'Thunderclap'…”BOOM”. An experience never to be forgotten. Pure sporting magic and so to prove “A Champion Team can always beat a Team of Champions”. An experience you need to put on your 'bucket list of things to do’, maybe Guidonia Montecelio, Rome in 2022, or if you can't wait that long 2020 at Whistling Straits! |
