A new face on the range…

We say hello and a very warm welcome to Richard Allerston who joins the team as Ranger at Winchester Golf Academy.

Richard started golf in his teens at Andover Golf Club but these days you’ll find him practising at the Academy or playing at Avington off a handicap of 22.1. His other passion is football and he’s a founding member and coach of the Worthy’s Youth Football Club, and a qualified football referee – getting through over sixty games a season.

You’ll find Richard in the Golf Shop or on the driving range – if you have any questions about Toptracer or would like to try a new virtual golf course, just ask and he’ll be delighted to help

Great Response to Ladies Golf …

Ladies golf @ WGA

Our Gapping and Course Confidence sessions were definitely a hit – all the places were snapped up within 24 hours! If you are still interested, we are taking a reserve list and we will be putting on more dates in the very near future, so still get in touch to register your interest.

We have a few places left for our total beginners ‘Give Golf a Go’ so call us on 01962 885254 to sign up.

We are also organising a small team of ladies from Winchester Golf Academy to play a friendly, competitive match (9 holes) against a team of ladies at The Hampshire from 2pm on 29th October – do let us know if you’d like to join the team – JUST £12 per visitor.

Junior news

New and Improved Passport Programme …

We’re looking forward to getting our junior passport programme back up and running in September. This term we’ve extended the course to run for the full term giving our juniors more time to progress and offering even better value for money per session.

We’ve also changed the age groups and added another after school session so that we can tailor the content of each session to be even more age and ability appropriate.

The new Programme starts on Thursday 12th September and runs until Thursday 19th December – cost is also £110 per term.

4.30-5.30pm for 5-7 yrs
5.30-6.30pm for 8-10yrs
7.00-8.00pm for 11-14 yrs

Back to basics

There are any number of online tutorials giving you the 'perfect advice' as to how to cure a specific problem you may have with your game. However, the key to solving most issues in sport (golf included) is to go right back to where it all began - the fundamentals.

Check your fundamentals

The way you set-up to the ball writes the script for the swing. This may be one of the more basic elements to the game but yet it is also one of the most overlooked – and that can be dangerous for your scorecard.

Jack Nicklaus once said:

"If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world”

The most beautiful shot in golf

If we were to ask you this question what would you say? We think some of you would say the ‘Tiger stinger’ but a good proportion would say the pitch shot that takes a couple of bounces before stopping to a halt. It looks sensational but how on earth do you play it?

The key to making this shot is simple – your wedges. Yes, technique is key and is certainly something we can talk you through during a lesson but without the correct equipment you stand no chance.
