Hello golfers,
This week I am introducing a new feature to the newsletter, which will follow a golfer through a 6 week course of lessons.
Josh Mulchay
Josh is a promising young golfer and at 12 years old has a current handicap of 15 at South Winchester Golf Club. Josh has booked a series of 6 x 1 hour golf lessons, with the intention of having one a week here at the Academy. Before his first session this week, we both sat down and discussed his current strengths and weaknesses and also set some goals through the winter.
We identified that his main weakness was ball striking on his approach shots into greens, between 100 and 175 yards.
The lesson
'You can't fire a cannon from a canoe'
Impact
Josh was off balance through most of his approach shots into the green. As you can see from the picture below, his left foot is entirely off the ground as he reaches his impact position.
Being a smaller junior when I was Josh's age I can relate to this as it's something I used to do to try and gain more distance.
So we decided to change Josh's Stance and feet position at set up.
We've made his stance wider for more stability and pointed his left toe out to help him transfer his weight onto his front foot through the impact. In turn this will help him maintain his posture through the swing.
Before and after
Next week, we will review this and Josh will have recorded his on course stats from his two rounds over the weekend.
This will really show us whether his approach shots into the green are really the main weakness of his game.
To be continued…
Junior Passport Programme
After great success from the first programme, we're writing to let you know that we are going to run another 9 week golf programme in January 2016. This will enable the juniors to progress even further along the programme. For those who missed out in the summer, we will be running a new group alongside. The Junior Golf Passport at Winchester Golf Academy is the Golf Foundation's national structured learning programme for children aged 6-12 years, endorsed by the PGA.
Under the guidance of our PGA Professionals, involvement in the programme will help to transform junior golfers into competent players ready for regular play or membership at a golf club. There are loads of great reasons to choose this programme:
- Incorporates all aspects of the game, from technique to etiquette
- Develops personal skills
- Has a focus on fitness
- You and your child can use the Junior Golf Passport website to monitor and support their progress
- Classes are run by fully qualified PGA Professionals What will they learn?
* PUTTING * SHORT GAME * SWING * ON THE COURSE * * FIT FOR GOLF * READY FOR GOLF * SKILLS FOR LIFE
We will be holding four 1 hour group sessions after school every Thursday from 7th January 2016.
As before, two sessions will begin at 4.30pm and another two sessions at 7.00pm. These sessions will run consecutively for 9 weeks for just £75.00 per junior. With only 32 spaces available please book now to avoid disappointment.
